Summer Agility Competition!
SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 8th - DAY OF ENTRY ACCEPTED!
The weather looks fantastic - come join in the fun this Sunday, September 8th in Brooks, OR! Day of entries please arrive before 8:30am so we can get everything organized. Bring your filled out paperwork (downloadable entry form is below!), waiver and a check made out to 'Heather Christenson' (Cash is accepted, but no change will available):
Important Details Below!
WHEN and WHERE
- Address: 10315 River RD. NE, Salem, Oregon 97303
- The competition is on Sunday, Sept 8th with the first dog on the line at 9am (rain or shine!)
- Gates open at 8am - you will be directed where to park. After 9am the gates the property must remained closed, if you arrive or leave after 9am, for everyone's safety please make sure to close the gate after you
- The running order will be: Biathlon Standard, Biathlon Jumpers, Speedstakes - running from Tall to Small
- There will be a break between the big and small dogs so we can switch out our workers and let them warm up/cool down their dogs
SAFETY
Safety of all competitors and dogs is my upmost concern, I want this to be a fun, positive experience for everyone involved. Any aggressive dogs will be asked to leave the property. Keep your dog under control and at least five feet from all other dogs at all times. Do not approach or pet any dog without the owner's express permission. All dogs should be on leash entering and exiting the ring and all dogs should be on leash unless in the specified off leash fenced area. If you are using the off leash warm up area, make sure you have your dogs under control at all times - NEVER let your dog run up to another dog. While your dog may not be aggressive, many dogs will feel highly threatened by unknown dogs approaching them and react accordingly. There is livestock (chickens, sheep and barn cats) on the property - do not approach the livestock with or without a dog, they don't need the stress.
Be safe and courteous to those around you and we'll all have a wonderful time!
WHAT TO BRING?
We will have some kiddie pools with water for the dogs to cool off in, snacks and water for the people. So what do you need to bring?
- Shade! There is no shade on the property, so the more easy ups and shade tents we can bring, the better! If you have extras, bring them along - no one is going to complain about too much shade around the rings.
- Chairs: Because everyone likes sitting
- Non meat treats (my personal recommendation - it's yellow jacket season, don't give them a reason to harass you!)
- Crate/shade cloth: You can crate out of your car, but make sure you have enough shade cloth and blocks to keep it cool
COMPETITION RULES
- Training in the ring is allowed! If you intend to train in the ring you may bring a quiet toy or some preapproved, non-crumbly treats (for god's sake, don't drop any!). Because of the time of year with yellow jackets I'd recommend staying away from 'meat' treats (cheese tends to be less attractive to them). For those that are training you have 90 seconds from the time you enter the ring. You may also stop a competition run to train in the ring, up to 90 seconds. If you are competing you may not have treats or toys with you in the ring, but you can still stop and train (though you will be eliminated from the competition).
- The 'Biathlon' competition consists of two rounds, a standard and jumpers course which are scored cumulatively for overall winners at every jump height. Winners placed 1st through 3rd will be awarded prizes for both standard and jumpers, as well as larger prizes for the overall winners (standard + jumpers) at each jump height. Scoring is time plus faults scoring (5 seconds added for bars and contacts, 20 sec for off courses, refusals not scored, up contacts not scored), so even if things don't go according to plan, still push to win! You must complete the course as indicated to stay in the competition (so if you go off course, make sure you fix it before continuing on!). Training in the ring is permitted, though you will be eliminated from competition (up to 90 seconds).
- The 'Speedstakes' competition will be judged the same as biathlon, with winners at every height
- All timing will be 'hand timed', to add to the authenticity of the event ;-)
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!
This will be a small, fun competition so we'll have to keep it moving by helping each other as the day goes along. There will be a break between running the small dogs and the large dogs so we can switch off with ring crew and still make sure everyone has a chance to warm up and cool down their dogs. Never feel like you need to rush! While some 'big' positions we will fill beforehand to make sure everything runs smoothly, the ring crew and other options can be filled at any time. We will need bar setters, leash runners, scorers, gate stewards and timers throughout the day! And the more people we can get to pitch in with coursebuilding, the faster that will go. If we have any brave souls willing to help move the big equipment back to the Poodlebarn after the standard run that would be awesome! <3 And don't forget the Saturday Night Fun Match - more info below!
SATURDAY NIGHT FUN MATCH
For those that can come help with moving equipment and setting up for the competition, we will have a fun match on Saturday evening. Set up begins at the Poodlebarn at 6pm on Saturday. We will be moving equipment from the barn to Heidi's place (around the corner), setting up fencing, shade, etc to get everything ready for Sunday morning! Afterwards we will run a fun match, where hopefully I can take pictures ;-) If you can come for set up on Saturday, email me to let me know you're coming so I can keep you in the loop: [email protected]
Directions to the poodlebarn where we will meet on Saturday evening:
Poodlebarn (Brooks Arena)
4296 Waconda Rd, Salem, OR 97303
Once you turn onto Waconda you will cross a set of railroad tracks, IMMEDIATELY afterwards turn right onto the gravel road, you will see the arena to your left. Turn left onto the drive towards the arena, but keep to the right going around the building (one-way sign). Pull your car up next to the arena parallel to park, but people can still get around you. If you will have barking dogs you can park in the rear of the building, or if they're quieter, pull around to to the front and park next to the the arena.
QUESTIONS, CONCERNS?
My goal for this event is to have fun, interesting and safe courses in a rare 'outdoor' setting while encouraging people to really push and do their best without worrying about 'qualifying'. I hope everyone has a good time no matter the outcome and enjoys a fun morning of agility and hanging out with great people and wonderful dogs. If you have any questions or concerns, just let me know what I can do to make this a better event!

All are welcome to this fun and competitive event, not just BAA students!
This competition consists of two rounds, a standard and jumpers course which are scored cumulatively for overall winners at every jump height. The courses will be challenging, but flowing and appropriate for all dogs (no backsides or threadles), and the spacing will be generous for large strided fast dogs with safe contact approaches. Choose the jump height that is appropriate for your dog (4/8, 12, 16, 20 or 24). Training in the ring is permitted, though you will be eliminated from competition (up to 70 seconds).
Following the biathlon competition, a fun and fast Speedstakes competition consisting of only jumps and tunnels. Fun for dogs of all levels, this event will be scored time plus faults (5 seconds added for bars, 20 sec for off courses, refusals not scored). Winners of each jump height 1st through 3rd will receive prizes. Training in the ring is permitted, though you will be eliminated from competition (up to 70 seconds).
Entries open July 20th and close September 1st. While entries are limited, we hope to have room for Day of Entry on September 8th (but can't commit to it until we get closer). Depending on weather and entry, the trial may start at 8 or 9am and we hope to be done by noon. So thankful for our volunteers which are the only reason we can make this happen - please let me know what you can help out with with the volunteer form above! For those that can come help with moving and setting up on Saturday night (Sept 7th), there will be a fun match after for your dogs to play.
